Bulk Zinc Oxide vs Zinc Citrate Powder: A Sourcing Guide for Canadian Manufacturers

If you're buying zinc in bulk, the choice between zinc oxide and zinc citrate isn't really a chemistry question. It's a sourcing question. One affects your cost per unit, the other affects what you can actually make.

Both are sold by the kilo. Both look like white powder in a 25 kg bag. But they go into different products, and paying wholesale for the wrong one is an expensive mistake to discover at pilot stage.

Here's how Canadian manufacturers decide which to buy.

The short version for a buyer: zinc oxide gives you more zinc per kilo. Zinc citrate dissolves better and absorbs more readily. Nearly every purchasing decision comes back to that.

Buying Bulk Zinc Oxide Powder in Canada

Zinc oxide barely dissolves in water. In a drink mix that's a problem. On skin, it's the whole point, because it stays where you put it instead of washing off.

What Canadian buyers use it for:

• Mineral sunscreens

• Creams, lotions, balms and barrier products

• Face and colour cosmetics

• Supplements where you need to keep capsule and tablet size down

The regulatory picture. Health Canada treats zinc oxide as a physical, or mineral, UV filter. Sunscreens using only physical filters are regulated as natural health products and carry an NPN, while chemical-filter sunscreens follow a different route. You can read Health Canada's guidance on sunscreens for the detail.

A note on RFQs. Asking a supplier for a price on "zinc oxide powder" isn't specific enough to get a meaningful quote. The same name covers materials that behave quite differently in a finished product. Tell your supplier what you're making, and the quote you get back will actually be comparable.

Buying Wholesale Zinc Citrate Powder in Canada

Zinc citrate dissolves readily, and dissolving is the first step towards absorption. That's why it's the standard pick for anything swallowed.

What Canadian buyers use it for:

• Zinc supplements in tablets, capsules and powders

• Multivitamin and multimineral formulas

• Mineral premixes and blends

• Nutritional and functional powders

• Toothpaste and mouthwash

The regulatory picture. Health Canada lists zinc citrate as an approved mineral ingredient in its Natural Health Products Ingredients Database, and plenty of zinc citrate products hold active licences in the Licensed Natural Health Products Database. It's a well-established ingredient in this market, not one you'd need to justify.

One question before you compare prices. Zinc citrate comes in slightly different versions, and two suppliers can both quote "zinc citrate powder" while offering different material. Ask which version you're being quoted, otherwise you're not comparing like with like.

Why the Cheaper Bulk Price Often Isn't Cheaper

This is the part that catches buyers out, and it's simple arithmetic.

Neither powder is pure zinc. Zinc oxide is roughly 80% zinc. Zinc citrate is roughly 31%.

So delivering the same amount of zinc takes more than double the quantity of zinc citrate powder.

That hits you twice. In a capsule with limited fill space, it can rule a formula out entirely. And on your costings, the lower price per kilo can still be the more expensive option once you account for how much you need. Compare the cost of the zinc you deliver, not the cost of the bag.

Your supplier's documentation confirms the exact figures for the material you're buying, so use those when you finalise costings.

Which Zinc Ingredient Should Canadian Manufacturers Buy?

Buy zinc oxide in bulk if you're making creams, lotions, cosmetics or mineral sunscreen, or if you need plenty of zinc without adding bulk to a dosage form.

Buy zinc citrate in bulk if you're making something to be swallowed, if you're building a multimineral blend, or if you're working on oral care.

For supplements, price both. Weigh available space against how well it needs to dissolve.

For sunscreen, it's zinc oxide. Zinc citrate isn't a UV filter and isn't an option.

Five Things to Get Right When Sourcing Zinc in Bulk

• Don't buy on price per kilo alone. Work out what the zinc itself costs you.

• Don't treat the two as swappable. Different products, different behaviour.

• Ask which version of zinc citrate you're quoted. It changes your numbers.

• Don't rely on the product name. Ask for the batch documentation.

• Qualify your supplier early. During development, not after launch.

What Your Bulk Zinc Supplier Should Provide

A product name tells you what a supplier calls something. The batch documentation tells you what was actually tested in the material arriving on your dock. The second one is what protects you.

At Green Jeeva Canada, testing runs in our own facility rather than being sent out, and every batch ships with its own documentation. See how our testing works
